Nigella’s Bread and Milk

This week’s I Heart Cooking Clubs theme is “Midnight Sneaks.”  What qualifies as a Midnight Sneak?  Any dish that would make you tiptoe to the kitchen in the middle of the night to chow down.  Some people enjoy savory-type snacks at midnight, but I go for the sugary, carb-coma inducing foods.  My favorite midnight snack is cereal eaten straight out of the box along with a glass of milk.  I destroy boxes of cereal regularly in this fashion.  When I first saw Nigella’s recipe for Bread and Milk, I thought it sounded kinda funky.  However, since it’s essentially a variation on my favorite midnight snack, I decided to give it a shot.  It was actually quite delicious!  I used my oatmeal bread instead of white bread and added some cinnamon.  This made a pretty good “Midnight Sneak!”

Nigella’s Bread and Milk (Adapted from Nigella’s recipe on Food Network)

Ingredients

  • 2 thick slices good white bread (I used toasted oatmeal bread.)
  • 2 teaspoons sugar or vanilla sugar
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon or to taste
  • 1 cup milk

Directions

  1. Tear the bread into rough chunks, and sprinkle with the sugar and cinnamon.
  2. Warm the milk and pour over the bread and sugar and cinnamon to serve.

  1. Huh. Seemingly strange…yet I bet it was really tasty!! I’d definitely try it…once…but, I’d probably keep mine separate in the end. Fun midnight sneak! 😀

    • I was surprised it ended up tasting ok, Heather!

  2. Oh my ! I saw this episode of Nigella…Made me look at milk and bread in a whole new light ! Although I haven’t tried it yet, I will surely do so now… you’ve really tempted me Shelly…the oatmeal bread is a much better alternative & it looks soooo perfect for these chilly chilly nights!

    • I saw this episode a while ago, too, Nat. Thought it looked fun! I still had reservations about trying it, though, but it wasn’t bad!

  3. I remember this episode of Nigella. It reminds me of toast with butter and cinnamon sugar – yum! Sounds fun and indulgent. I bet the kids would have fun with this one 😀

    • The kids would probably like it, Kim :). I’d toast the bread, though, if you’re gonna give it a shot. I think regular bread would be too soggy.

  4. hrm. sounds strange though maybe kinda good. a little like a quick simplified version of a bread pudding. might be worth a shot.

    • I agree that it’s strange, Eva. It was sorta like bread pudding in a way.

  5. Bread pudding is what I thought of as well.

    • Yep, sorta similar to it, Dave.

  6. I couldn’t do this one! Does not appeal at all. But, stick some eggs & cream in it and bake it for a while, and it’d be perfect!

    • lol I’m a big fan of bread pudding as well, WC. This was a tiny bit similar to bread pudding, but it certainly wasn’t the same!

  7. I’d try it–with cinnamon, sugar, bread & milk–what’s not to like?! A fun pick!

    • Thanks, Deb! While kinda weird it was pretty good.

  8. Who’d a thunk it?
This was probably the original cold cereal. Great idea for the midnight sneaks!

    • Lol You’re right, Natashya! It was sort of a variation on regular cold cereal 🙂

  9. That sounds like great comfort food – cinnamon and warm milk are great together.

    • Cinnamon and warm milk do go well together, Suzie 🙂

  10. I recently saw Nigella prepare this one and grab the kids and they all ate a bowl. But in bed……I couldn’t do that. This looks like good comfort food though. The basics.

    • Lol I don’t think I could eat this in bed let alone anything else either! It was rather tasty, though.

  11. I’d never heard of such a thing! Sounds like something you would eat and enjoy when no one else is around!

    • Lol I’d have to agree BD! I’d never heard of this either before seeing Nigella cook it on one of her TV episodes on Food Network.

  12. The very thought of the consistency makes my eyes water. No way I’d be able to swallow it.

    • Soooooo, you’re not trying this any time soon, eh? lol C’mon be daring, Syd!

  13. Okay…I had to come back and tell you that just a few minutes ago, my hubs came into the kitchen and said “I’m going to do what my mom used to do when I was little”…and he proceeded to rip up bread and put it in a bowl and cover it with milk!! Go figure…9 years together and this would be the first time I see him do this~!! 😀

  14. Sometimes the simplest things are best. This also sounds quite comforting!

    • I agree, Donna!

  15. I like this idea in theory… but in reality the texture of soggy bread totally freaks me out. Did it help to toast the bread first??

    • Oh yeah, Sarah Kate, I toasted the bread very well. I don’t think I could’ve eaten it if the bread was just plain. I ate it pretty quick, too, so it was still a bit crunchy.

  16. So simple. So delicious.

  17. I agree I would sneak out for this snack!

    • It was pretty good stuff, Cassie!

  18. Wow, what a cool idea, I can totally imagine Nigella getting up and eating this!

    • This certainly does seem Nigella-like doesn’t it, Cheryl? Comforting and filling 🙂

  19. I’ll have to try this simple little snack.

  20. Hi! Stopping over after visiting My Year on the Grill where he did your Fugasse bread with the onions peppers and cheese. Sounds so good! You were a “guest post inspiration” for him while he is away on vacation. Thanks for the inspiration!!

  21. My dad was making this 50 years ago. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this post. However, he didn’t tear the bread into chunks. Just two pieces of toast, buttered, sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar with some warm milk gently poured on top. It’s delicious.

    • Lol Isn’t it funny how once in a while you see things like this that take you back to when you were a kid? I’m glad reminded you of your dad’s creation, Lea Ann! It was actually quite good 🙂

  22. My Mom used to eat bread and milk with cinnamon sprinkled on top. She also did the same with leftover white rice.

    • I love doing the same with leftover rice, too, Michelle! Kinda like a quick rice pudding. I like to toss in a few raisins as well.
